What is Opera?

Opera, in music, is a drama that is sung to orchestral accompaniment. This is a unique fusion of music, acting, poetry, dance, pantomime, lighting effects, scenery and costumes that offers a theatrical experience that can be overwhelming with excitement and emotion. It typically has recurring themes which are intensified by musical repetitions that are developed as the piece (composed work of the music) progresses. It usually deals with tragic and heroic themes and is often a continuous music with set pieces such as solos, duets, trios, quartets, chorus, orchestra and choral pieces.

Opera originated in Italy as an entertainment at the courts of the Italian aristocracy. This came about in the baroque era (around the year 1600) - a major musical innovation or development in that era. Opera demands people who can sing and act simultaneously. Thus, Opera is simply a musical drama.
