What is the meaning of the term Black Codes?

Black Codes was a name given to laws passed by southern governments (white southerners) after the Civil War (in 1865) that was established during the presidency of Andrew Johnson. Its was established as an attempt to maintain the way of life they had known prior to the Civil War - to regulate the lives of former slaves. These laws imposed severe restrictions on freed slaves such as prohibiting their right to vote, forbidding them to sit on juries, limiting their right to testify against white men, carrying weapons in public places and working in certain occupations. Thus, it restrict the civil rights and civil liberties of African Americans, especially former slaves.
