In 1865 the United States officially put an end to slavery, this was a water shed period in the history of the United States and in the lives of the millions of African Americans who lived to experience freedom. It was during reconstruction that African Americans experienced levels of social and political freedoms and privileges that they could only dream of accessing before the Civil War. Freedom (along with civil rights and liberties) symbolized a new way of life for African Americans who for centuries were subjected to a life of servitude . Abolition of slavery meant freedom from: the separation of families, rape of women slaves by slave masters, beatings (and other punishments), working without consent, working for someone without wages, lack of access to education, white supervision during religious worship and the denial of marriage.Labels: American History, History
