The G. I. Bill of Rights was a bill that was passed by Congress in 1944 for returning veterans who were popularly referred to as GIs or G.I.s. It was officially known as the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 - a reward for US soldiers after WWII. It provided federal aid to help these war veterans get free scholarships to go to college, free job training, loans at low interest rates to buy houses in the Suburbs and start businesses, and one-year of unemployment compensation.
